Title: Crustal seismic anisotropy, geological ground truth from the Canadian Shield, and application to Taiwan (in English)

Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Friday, Nov 15th, 2013
Location:
 Room 213, Department of Geosciences
Colloquium chair: Prof. Shu-Huei Hung

Dear colleagues,

Dr. Vera Schulte-Pelkum from U. of Colorado at Boulder is visiting Taiwan this week and will give a talk in our department on Friday morning. Her research highlights lie in in the seismic structure of the crust and upper mantle and its relation to tectonics and geodynamics. She is particularly interested in regions of continental collision (Himalaya/Tibet; Taiwan; Zagros in Iran) and extension (Basin and Range, western U.S.) and has done a number of significant studies in these regions by mapping tectonically induced deformation fabrics and foliations in the crust from seismic anisotropy. She is currently working with Prof. Francis Wu on TAIGER data and has obtained some interesting results which she will present in Friday's seminar. Besides giving a talk, she is also very interested talking to anyone on regional geology and tectonics in Taiwan and any other related topics of continental dynamcs. She will stay the whole day in the Global Change Center on Wednesday and be in the department building until ~2 pm before she leaves for the airport. If you'd like to discuss with her personally, please let me know as soon as possible and I will arrange the time for you to meet.

Look forward to seeing you all in the seiminar on Friday.

Shu-Huei
